Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a bright, diverse group of eighth graders that travel to our school because it offers a college-centered education for all students.

Our students have developed strong literacy skills. They have many strategies in their reading and writing toolkit. My next area of focus is vocabulary building. Specifically, I want to help our students develop their academic vocabulary with an eye to getting the best possible SAT verbal scores.

I will be working with my English class every week on a set of words selected because of their high frequency on the SAT. We will contextualize words based on meaning by using thesauri to relate new words to those we already know. We will begin to develop the ability to figure out the meaning of unknown words based on related words and to do this we will need sturdy, detailed dictionaries.

This is a hefty request that would aid our students for years to come. If every pair of students has precisely the same thesaurus or dictionary I can tailor-make their vocabulary activities to make it the most meaningful learning opportunity.
