Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are active learners. They learn through building, constructing, creating, engaging, and interacting with each other. Many of them are kinesthetic and visual learners. They learn best when they can move around and when visuals accompany text, vocabulary, and concepts. My classes are engaged the most when they are creating 3D sculptural work, working collaboratively, and discussing with their groups their artistic decisions. I want to create a class that plays into their strengths and builds on it.
Each student in my classes has a unique vision and voice that they display in their artwork.
Students learn to use art to solve problems, discuss their experiences, and to build community—in the classroom, at school, and in the surrounding city.
For many of my students, their high school art course is their first and only art course in their K-12 education. I want to make all my art classes as comprehensive as possible. Their voice and vision has a vital place in their surrounding communities, academic institutions, and the world of art.
My Project
Pomona has a history and tradition of being an artistic city with a thriving ceramic community. In Pomona, we are lucky to have one of the only museums in the U.S. dedicated solely to ceramics. I would like students to gain more access to these resources and to experience equity in their education.
With your assistance, we will be able to integrate ceramics including hand building and throwing into Art 1, Art 2, and AP Studio Art curriculum.
Your donation of materials will help us build on other donations of ceramic wheels, kilns, and other materials. Your donation will help us to purchase wedging boards and ceramic tools. We currently do not have any of these items. Students will use wedging boards to wedge clay before throwing on the wheel as well as rolling clay that will be used for slab building. Students will use the ceramic tool sets to cut clay, throw on the wheel, and for hand-building and sculpting. As the program builds and students learn ceramic skills, it is our hope that we will be able offer ceramics classes where clay is the primary medium.
