Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids are special because they belong to me. Once they entered my class, they took over my heart. My heart is filled with sweet, artistic, loud, energetic, kind, and at times a bit dramatic, third graders.
Sometimes it's hard to get my kids excited to learn when they come to school sad, hungry, or mad at the world.
My kids worry about adult-level life problems. Instead of being exposed to trips to the zoo or a baseball game, some of my kids wonder if they have a place to live, food to eat, and clothes that are clean and fit.
My Project
My English Language Learners love la Lucha Libre. So I'm thinking how can I make this into a fun memorable lesson. I found three books that will help my students learn English with fun books. Thunder Boy Jr., Lucia la Luchadora and Rudas: Niño's Horrendous Hermanitas will be books to inspire my students to write their own short story.
I want their story to come to life by making it a huge production with an iPad for filming, costumes and a table, rug and drawer for a special writers area.
I want my students to feel special when they write. I'll be teaching my students how to use a dictionary to ensure that their English story makes sense. We will use the colorful Astrobright paper to publish our short stories and the ink to print it out and make it look professional. The iPod will be used to film our production and the capes will be used as our costumes.
The rug, table and drawer will be a special area for my students to work at to inspire them. There students will use the sticky notes to write down ideas. The hanging wall display will be use to post students work. I love this project because it involves creative writing, reading, technology and performance.
