This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My amazing students involved in this project are named Sumith, Lauren, Deanna, and Cassie! All four are leaders in our FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) chapter which works to build career ready leaders in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences. They have dedicated their time this year to running chapter events including a tobacco-free student campaign and many service projects on and off campus including working with the elderly during the holidays, writing cards to servicemen, and making rope toys for dogs in shelters. These four students competed in competitive recognition events in the fields of Child Development, Fashion Construction, Sports Nutrition, and Interior Design, and placed in the top three in the state. Because of their hard work they all qualify for Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia and hope to represent California in this important conference.

FCCLA is all about preparing for college, career, and family. As the Career Technical Student Organization for FACS, student leaders in FCCLA learn leadership and prepare for careers in FACS-related fields. By attending the national conference these students get the opportunity to network with other FCCLA members, attend workshops, and participate in tours/activities that build their knowledge and skills in communication, team building, and cooperation. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity as the students have to qualify at state in order to compete in competive recognition events at the national level. There is so much that can be learned by attending this conference!

In Their Own Words

I would love to compete at the highest level by going to nationals. Last year I was unable to reach my goal because of complications with school approval but I am so excited to have the opportunity again this year. At nationals I hope to represent California and to place in fashion construction by creating the best garment and to give the best presentation to the best of my abilities! -Lauren

In this project we can be leaders to other members in the chapter by showing them that you can achieve your goals through hard work and perseverance. We can set a positive example for students in the classroom and help since we have learned to master it. We will take advantage of all the leadership opportunities that FCCLA has to offer so we can then become a stronger leader to others.

This trip is very important to me because even when I qualified last year, it was a disappointing let down that I was unable to attend. Now in my senior year, I made it a personal goal to qualify for nationals again and I would do anything I can to make ends meet so that I can go. It has reached importance beyond me and into my family, friends, and teachers because they all know how much it means to me to have this opportunity. -Lauren
