My students need to combine art with STEM by utilizing the following: tempera paint, markers, several robots (Dash, Ollie, and Sphero) and an IPAD to control them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I do a push-in program for gifted and talented students (GATE). What this means is that I go into the classroom and meet the needs of not only GATE students, but the rest of the class.
Last year, after 3 years of having a substitute, we finally acquired a full time art teacher.
I was able to collaborate with him on a project for the whole school and for our community on National Parks. Being able to collaborate with other teachers, allows me to create more connections in my teaching for the students. The students then realize that the lessons that they are learning are not separate, but can all relate to each other. This makes their learning richer.
My Project
To me, art can inspire and/or create a feeling. It allows for an expression of creativity. I tell my students that I am a great stick drawer and there is no shame in that.
Art in school is a lot of times separated from the regular classrooms.
It gets disconnected from it because it is utilize as a time for teachers to prepare for their classes. I want to collaborate with the art teacher (have them introduce Jackson Pollack's work) and connect art to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). I want my students to create art utilizing three different robots - Ollie, Dash, and Sphero- and tempera paint. They will have to program the robots with an iPad to create their art projects. Next, I want them to engineer a way for these robots to manipulate a marker to create geometric shapes. Then they will discuss what variables can be changed and write about their art. Lastly, and hopefully, we can exhibit it for the parents.
