Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all from an urban neighborhood in North Las Vegas. Most of them come from low-income families and most of them are minorities. Students in my classes are of varying ability levels and interest and this project can help meet them where they are at. They are a creative bunch with a lot of energy and they love the opportunity to experience new things. Many of them have not had a lot of opportunities to make art in school and most have never had the opportunity to do any metalsmithing.
My Project
This project fuses art with chemistry. We are going to create original jewelry using up-cycled copper, brass and steel. We will use the tools requested to cut and form metal into things like earrings, bracelets, pendants and rings.
Students will be electrolytic etching to add images and or text to their own handmade jewelry designs.
Designs will be printed into vinyl using the laser engraver. Then the vinyl designs are adhered to the metal to mask the parts that are not to be etched. The etch will happen by submersing the pieces into a bath of salt water and using a battery charger to run electricity through the pieces.
