Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school and I have created a new program benefiting the thirty most at risk students on campus who have a range of disabilities. This Academy is where students come for 2 periods a day to work at their ability level and bring them up to grade level in Language Arts and Math. Students also receive an hour of group counseling a day. We focus on behavior, academics and attendance and work closely with families and administration to monitor success. The goal for students is to become successful in school and graduate back to mainstream classes.
My Project
With the help of local therapy dogs, my students will be working on a year long digital story about the benefits of having a therapy dog in the classroom. The story will be told from the perspective of the dogs. We will be attaching the GoPro to the Therapy dogs to see what they see as they help each student.
This film will give awareness to the benefits of therapy dogs in the classroom.
The film will be submitted to our local Digicom film festival and will be recognized throughout our valley.
Most of my students have had a difficult time acquiring adequate social skills and struggle to develop and maintain positive peer relationships. Group work has been a struggle. Digital storytelling has brought them together in a positive way to create healthy social behaviors. To see them working and learning together would be my ultimate goal as their instructor.
