This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds. A large portion of my school's population come from poverty-stricken homes; poverty is their everyday dark cloud. They are kids with hopes and dreams of making their lives better and bettering the future of their families. They deserve a chance to have hope. That hope begins with giving them a voice. They bring their suggestions to us and we listen. We do whatever it takes to help them find success in school and life. It is our hope that their many successes in school translate into finding better lives for themselves and their families.

My Project

This year was eye-opening as far as student absences are concerned. Teaching middle school is extremely difficult, but one of the odds stacked against staff and students is student sickness. In order to prevent, or at least hopefully lessen student illness, classroom cleaning supplies are imperative.

A clean classroom is a successful classroom.

Aside from teaching literacy skills, many students must be taught hygiene skills. One success I had with a student was showing him how to clean underneath his fingernails. Though I didn't have official nail cleaning supplies, I bought a new toothbrush, a bar of soap, and latex gloves. I showed the student step by step how to clean his nails. From that day forward, he was more confident and no longer hid his hands inside of his desk. Since our classrooms are only cleaned at the end of the school year, the rest of the year is a breeding ground for germs. I often clean the desks with DIY inexpensive cleaning supplies. Having Lysol wipes would make the job a lot easier. With the wipes, students can put on a latex glove and clean their desk. This way, germs that would be sitting on the desk for days in and days out will be removed. All of the supplies will be used to help students practice clean habits.
