We are a small rural town with an enrollment of just over 1000 students in K-12. There has been an increase in diversity over the past few years and we expect our enrollment to increase in the following years. My students are looking forward to learning about their peers and sharing experiences. My student have a variety of backgrounds and abilities. They can struggle with coping skills, emotional awareness and social skills. While some students come to us with what could be seen as setbacks, they are open to learning new approaches to life.
Learning and using restorative justice practices helps kids build strong bonds, work through conflicts and restore the relationships that could have been harmed from the conflict.
Working in circles helps my kids to learn effective communication skills that will increase their success in life.
My Project
These supplies will help build and maintain community in my classroom. By using community building circles, the kids get to know one another and learn they have more in common then they might have thought. Hearing about similar experiences, commonalities in their backgrounds and how they solve problems builds a stronger connection between the kids. When their connection to each other is strong, they are more accepting of each other. They trust each other more, are more willing to take positive risks and work better together.
Using restorative practices in the classroom erodes stereotypes and misconceptions kids may have of people from different backgrounds.
The table topics and chat cards facilitate discussion between the kids so they can get to know each other better. Learning mindfulness techniques can help mitigate anger, frustration and anxiety. The thumb balls and conversation dice are fun ways to release energy and initiate discussions. The "Making Things Right" book includes lessons and activities on how to get the kids involved in running circles, peer mediation and making restorative connections to their families.
Building tolerance by developing intra-personal skills as well as a deeper interpersonal knowledge will help my kids be ready for whatever comes their way when they go out into the world.
