Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 9th graders at a public high school in Oklahoma City. They are primarily low-income and minority students. Many have trouble with the English language, and one group is entirely newcomers from various backgrounds, from Latin America to Somalia to Vietnam. I hope to inspire them to take full advantage of the financial opportunities they will have in America by instilling a sense of enthusiasm for understanding how to manage their money.
My Financial Literacy class is full of enthusiastic and bright young individuals.
They are learning about budgeting, retirement, savings, investments, borrowing money, and insurance. They need practice with more practical than theoretical use of money.
My Project
My students need to learn about Financial Literacy. To create enthusiasm for the subject while teaching money management skills, I plan to use board games. My students love to have fun, but don't really enjoy sitting in a classroom. To help them learn, and help them learn the concepts of normally dry and boring finance classes, I will have them play Life, Monopoly, Pay Day, and other finance-based games.
With groups of up to thirty-five kids at a time, it is important for me to have enough games for them to all be able to play at once, and rotate between different games.
These games will also teach valuable social skills in the classroom.
