Keeping Warm in Wintry Weather

My students need mittens to keep their hands warm and dry in the winter so that they can play outside in the snow and on cold days.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are amazingly energetic and eager to learn, but they are a diverse group, with different academic and social/emotional needs. Many are English Language Learners, with little to no exposure to the English language outside of school. They crave learning opportunities that reflect their diversity and teach them the academic and social-emotional skills they so desperately need, in authentic and engaging ways.

In my classroom, there are 22 unique, creative, diverse, and brilliant students, each bubbling with potential.

However, there are many barriers that get in the way of them achieving what they are capable of doing. My school is a Minnesota focus school, meaning it is in the lowest ten percent of schools that receive Title I dollars in our state.

Many of my students do not have access to life essentials that fill their basic needs, such as staying warm in the winter. Over 90% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. The student body is very diverse, including African American, Latino, Somali, Asian, Native American, and white students. Our school has a high population of homeless and transient students, and many students have experienced great deals of trauma in their young lives.

My Project

My school is located in Minnesota, a state with wintry weather for much of the school year. However, many of my students do not come to school with mittens or gloves, meaning it is very difficult for them to safely play outside during recess. Without proper waterproof mittens, my students (many of whom are new to the country and have never experienced snow or cold weather before) cannot enjoy playing outside in the snow with their peers.

Since students value recess, and it helps them to develop social-emotional and gross motor skills, it is a missed learning opportunity when students cannot truly engage in outdoor play with other students.

Therefore, we are requesting these mittens for students to borrow for recess so that they can truly be safe and learn during outdoor opportunities in the school day. With these materials, my students will be able to play outside, developing social and physical development skills while also preparing themselves to be ready to learn the rest of the school day.
