Passing the Pick & Bow: Upright Bass

My students need an upright bass and upright bass stand to further their studies of traditional Appalachian music and culture.

The hills and valleys in the mountains of north Georgia have a strong tradition of making music. After the fields were plowed and the hoes laid down, the mountain people took up their picks and bows and began to play the tunes learned from their ancestors. A tradition, however, is no good, unless it's passed down to the next generation. My project seeks to offer music lessons on traditional instruments such as the banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin and upright bass. Students will have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument solo as well as in jam sessions with other students on other instruments. The majority of my alternative school students come from poverty-stricken homes. Through generous donations from the community, we have acquired funding to pay local musicians for instruction. We also have received some instruments and materials for my students, but not all. Until recently, my students learned to play the upright bass on my personal instrument; however, I had to sell my bass to make ends meet, and we’ve had to do without ever since. With the successful funding of this project, my students will have an upright bass to continue their exploration of Appalachian music. You will have an impact on the lives of at-risk students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to take music lessons. Learning to play an instrument takes time and practice.
