I teach 8th grade Language Arts to students in an urban setting. Because it is a public school, our students come to us from surrounding neighborhoods and create a diverse community of learners. In addition to teaching Language Arts during the day, I spend many of my afternoons at the school running (or assisting with) after school enrichment programs.
At our school, we pride ourselves on being able to offer our student body a number of ways to experience the arts in order to enrich their education. Our students come from a variety of neighborhoods, though they are generally low income. However, our programs are always lively and busy as our creative student body comes together to create art, drama, dance, music and even fashion! This year I started the Fashion Club, an after school program designed for students to learn how to sew, as well as design and create their own clothing. Through their sewing projects, they enrich their math and reading skills, and make connections as they work on purses, pillows and even their own clothing! Some students are able to use their skills to create portfolios and earn admission into local fashion-centered high schools. Additionally, they strengthen their art and design skills by helping to create the costumes for the annual school musical, the Winter and Spring Concerts and the Talent Show.
To help our fashion club reach new heights, we need new sewing machines. Our current set is out of date, and we spend more time trying to fix them than we do working on projects. New sets of sewing machines will enable us to create costumes for our school musical and talent show productions. Ultimately, having a new set of sewing machines will benefit future students as we will be able to use them for years to come.
You will make it possible for our amazing programs to continue. Our school thrives on our after school arts programs, and thanks to generous donors, we can supply the resources we need to provide these exciting enrichment opportunities for students who might never have given these activities a second thought.
