Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Minecraft is a very popular strategy and building game that my students love. It is educational and has students work together and build a variety of things ranging from airplanes, skyscrapers, and even large cities. Their imagination is the limit in this open-world game that lets their creativity grow and develop.
I teach in a fifth grade regular education, special education, and English language learner inclusion classroom.
My students this year range in ability over several grade levels in the area of math, reading, and writing. By the time they get to fifth grade, some of them begin to realize that they are behind their classmates. It is my passion to change that and help all of them be successful.
My Project
I am requesting an PlayStation 4, an extra controller, and a few Minecraft games for my students to play and investigate.
Minecraft is like a digital version of classic block building, where players can create interesting and imaginative new environments.
After, they can go on adventures with the things that they have built. Even more, the game introduces obstacles to players who then have to devise creative solutions to overcome those obstacles. In short, it has a plethora of ways for players to hone specific, cognitive skills. The Engineering Design Process will be utilized in solving these tasks.
Minecraft also enables players to build environments and tools that help them strategize, survive, and explore the game. Its very design encourages creative thinking. The game is often compared to Legos, in that the players use block structures to come up with imaginative creations.
Now Minecraft can be a tool for students to interact with the design of historic places and buildings. They can go to Italy and see the Roman Coliseum, or they can go to London and view the Globe Theatre.
I also plan on tying in Minecraft to creative writing. In Minecraft, students can create buildings, towns, and even cities. What an excellent opportunity to tie this in with creative writing. Students could make up stories about characters that they create in their own Minecraft world. Then they can act out those stories and really bring their setting to life. I also plan on having students illustrate designs by hand and bring them to life in their game.
I also plan on using Minecraft in science and mathematics to help students in understanding volume. Minecraft builds with cubes, so this will be an ideal learning simulation for investigating the volumes of different shapes.
