Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Miss, last night I called my family outside to see the full moon!" I teach first grade in a Title One school where many of our students are from Migrant families. My school is in a high-need community where parents are unable to donate or participate in fundraisers that would provide additional supplies for their children. These children are adorable, well-mannered, and very appreciative.
My students enthusiastic response to a book I read to them about the Solar System was exhilarating. I asked them if they have ever looked through a telescope or binoculars. They wanted to know more and how they could do such things. My school does not have a telescope and the 6 binoculars are shared throughout the entire school of over 1000 students. The children would be so excited to be able to use these scientific instruments and even take turns carrying them home for the family to use.
The book about the Solar System is what sparked the enthusiasm. I would like to provide the children with copies of the books I have chosen to read and take home to share. The icing on the cake would be to send a telescope and binoculars home for a visit too.
Our country is in dire need of more scientists and engineers. Where can we start? Right now in the first grade through holding their interest and delving deeper into learning about the world around us.
