Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It has been proven that children who read over the summer are more likely to remain at their previous school year reading level. I am a special education literacy resource coach servicing two pre-k to 4th grade public schools.

Many children do not have books at home to read over the summer. The reading gains of the school year are lost when children are unable to continue reading throughout the summer.

The Reading Rocks! program will provide each child with 6 self-selected books on his/her reading level. The program needs books for the children to take home over the summer. We also need awards recognizing those children who completed their reading logs over the summer. Through a book drive, partial district funding, and Donors Choose, we hope to lessen summer reading loss and add to each child's home library while increasing parental involvement.

Parents are willing to help, but are unsure of what to do. Through this project, parents will be educated as to how to effectively read to and with their children. You will make it possible for my students to bond with their parents over a good book and to develop a love of reading.
