Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach art at a low income but highly creative inner-city charter school. I teach seventh through twelfth grades.
The students will study the history of mosaics. They will study how different cultures, religions, and art periods have utilized mosaics. They will look at examples of mosaics from ancient Islamic temples, ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, Byzantine era, as well as current artist who still use mosaics today. After the students have a balanced history of mosaics they will use their knowledge and creativity to create a mosaic art work.
The resources needed are the materials to create a mosaic. 125 students will create a 6 inch by 6 inch mosaic design using tiles, glue and grout.
This is an interdisciplinary and multicultural lesson plan where the students will create an art work in a medium they have never utilized before. By supporting this project 125 students will gain insight to an art form that is not often covered in traditional public schools to this high of a degree of emphasis. Due to generous citizens these students will create art works that will give them greater understanding of art, history, and different cultures.
