My students need Footballs, Volleyballs, Basketballs, Soccer Balls, Ladders, Cones, Parachutes, and the rest of these sports equipment for their ProDay Combines.
Our third grade class is full of positive energy and a spirit of eagerness as we spend school days together learning new skills and ideas that help us grow as people and productive members of our community. Although we face many challenges in and out of school, we love being in our classroom!
Our students are survivors of many of the effects of growing up in a wounded community.
The students of our school, however, are also blessed with an extreme measure of resiliency that empowers them to strive for greater goals and accomplishments that are reflective of their strong-willed nature. Although our community has more than its share of problems and issues, our school environment is not only educationally enlightening, it is also a haven of safety, for each child becomes an important part of an extended family. As the students, staff, and faculty of our school continue to be lights in our community, we hope to bring about a positive change in attitude and opinion of who we are and hope to be.
My Project
"I want to be a Football Player," said Charles. Another student raises their hand, "I want to be a Volleyball Player," Anna said. "Me too, I want to be a Volleyball and a Soccer Player," added Sarah. Every year, the students in my class share with me how they want to be a Professional Athlete when they get older. And every year I share with them how tough and challenging it is going to be but that it is also achievable.
There are however, other students that are not into sports or have not been exposed to sports yet.
A couple of years ago, one of my students tried encouraging a student who was not playing to join them in a game of soccer. The boy replied that they have no athletic equipment at home and that no one plays with them. My student was shocked and told the boy that he has an extra soccer ball at home that he would give him, if he wanted. He also told him that he would show him how to play if he came early in the morning.
As a class the next day we talked about what if we had a Pro Day, in which we brought in athletic equipment and had our whole class go through each sport. We would learn how to stretch, run, and jump. We would learn how to throw a football, shoot a basketball, kick a soccer ball, and spike a volleyball. After a couple of years, I feel we now have the opportunity to make this happen. With this equipment, I will conduct a Pro Day with my students. We will set up stations that each student will go through and hopefully become more knowledgeable about each sport.
