It is sometimes said that a picture is worth a thousand words; just imagine the worth of videos, sounds, and other twenty-first century media in our classroom! I teach math and science to all of the seventh graders at a K-8 elementary school. Over 80% of our students come from low-income households. 1 in 10 of our students is learning English as a second language, and 15% of our students receive some kind of special education services.
My students truly love exploring science and ask for more and more demonstrations and experiments. I continue to search for ways to make their learning more hands-on. While we generally have enough usable textbooks for all of the students, we lack a lot of other supplies. Luckily, our classroom does have computers for students to use, but these computers could be better put to use with an accompanying printer and digital camcorder. Indeed, these computers could be part of more hands-on experiences in math and science.
A classroom camcorder would allow students to document our scientific experiments and demonstrations. A camcorder would also provide students with ways to create their own documentaries, television shows, and mini-movies about the things we have discussed in science and math class. Students could then edit and present their work on the classroom computer. Furthermore, science and math pursuits require that individuals publish and share what they have learned with others in written form. A classroom printer would allow students to publish what they have learned. As students prepare for high school, it is important to provide them with paper writing skills, which requires knowledge of formatting and printing typed papers. The experience of creating multimedia presentations would require that students have a clear grasp of the content we are studying. The important idea that scientific ideas should be published would be reinforced. This process would also provide students with true twenty-first century educational opportunities that integrate traditional learning practices with technology.
Your generosity will ensure that my students are exposed to the world of science and math using the technology that now surrounds us. The critical thinking and creative skills that my students will develop will be invaluable. Please help my students explore math and science with technology and empower them to publish what they have learned.
