My students are eager to learn more about science, and they are yearning for hands-on, STEM-based labs. Currently, my science lab lacks the materials needed for them to be able to do this. I want my classroom to be a hands-on, critical thinking lab that is growing our next generation scientists.
My students come from an area of extreme poverty.
They, along with our school district, are limited in resources. All of my students receive free lunch, and the majority of them have never been outside of our area. Most have never been to a mall, much less a museum for learning.
These students are very appreciative of anything I place in front of them, and I have watched their critical thinking skills grow, along with their drive for learning, by implementing science labs in our classroom. I want to be able to continue to provide them with these learning opportunities, experience their growth, and teach them skills they need to ensure they have a better future.
My Project
My students will use the Carolina STEM Challenge: Solar Car Design Kit in physical science to apply their knowledge of alternative energy sources, gears, ratios, energy transformations, and friction. I want them to be able to use this knowledge to build a solar powered car that is fast and efficient, and to also see the benefits of alternative energy sources.
My students will use the Carolina ABO-Rh Typing kit and Carolina BioKits: Whose Baby? to determine blood types and match those types based on genetics. I want them to apply their knowledge of genetics and critical thinking skills to complete this lab correctly.
My students are yearning for hands-on, STEM labs that build their critical thinking skills, and allow them to apply scientific concepts in different situations.
The donation of these materials will ensure that my students are given that chance. As an educator, there is nothing more valuable than seeing a child's eyes light up from what they are learning and knowing that you were able to make that possible.
