Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

At my public charter school in Washington, DC, my fourth graders arrive for school everyday at 7:30 am. They remain learning, exploring and experimenting for 9 hours- more than many adults. Learning at our school is about falling in love with books, exploring our leadership and character skills and experimenting in science and math classes. The students at my school dream of attending to competitive and excellent area high schools and colleges. We are a preparatory school and we believe in our students. Many of our students come from the high-need and low socio-economic community in which our school is located. School becomes a safe haven and a place to discover.

As one of the fourth grade language arts and social studies teachers, it is my job to ensure that my hard working and dedicated learners have the materials they need to achieve. When we study the Age of Exploration during our History Unit, our students select, research and become one of the Explorers. We hold an Explorer's Day where the students submit their proposal to the King & Queen to receive funding for their journey to the new world. This type of curiosity infused into our social studies lessons is what creates avid learners among our students. In order to continue to create and develop activities, lessons and units such as these, we need lots and lots of books. Our students need to be able to read about the people who lived during that time in history. They need to be able to dive into the culture and research. Unfortunately, we do not have unlimited budgets with which we can buy books at our school.

This is where you come in and help make this a reality. For history to come alive for our fourth graders in Washington, DC, we need your help. This proposal would purchase 40 books about the people, culture and times of the history units we will study. This includes biographies, historical fiction, poetry, non-fiction and other literature genres. With these resources, our students will have the advantage of reading about history so that it can come alive to them. These books have been hand selected since they will be perfect in enhancing the learning of our students.

Your donation will make it possible for my fourth graders to learn, research, and explore different time periods of history. Reading makes lives better and opens doors. With your generosity, our students will have the chance to become the future leaders of history.
