My Students
Is there a special teacher or activity that you remember from elementary school? Something that you just couldn't wait to do every day? In third grade, I had the chance to record data from a weather station outside of our classroom. I would love for our second graders to have that same opportunity!
Our students are very eager to learn!
We have a very diverse population of students who come from many different ethnic backgrounds. We also have a lot of diversity in the social classes of our families. There are a lot of families in our community who are not able to financially provide their children with the support they need to practice at home. Anything our school can do to help our students while they are with us during the day is very valuable. Teachers work very hard to see students succeed. We feel that if we provide them with plenty of interactive and hands-on opportunities we are giving them the ability to be academically successful.
My Project
One of our four science units is weather. Not only do we discuss weather during our science time, but we read books about it during our Reading time. Students will be checking the weather at two points during the school day. They will check it in the morning, and again in the afternoon before we leave school. It is important for them to see the changes in weather just throughout the day. Then, they will dress our weather panda that is on our requested supply list of materials! They will see the importance of how rapidly weather is able to change in such a short period of time. It will also relate to their real life by showing them that they need to dress a certain way according to the day's weather predictions.
This project will improve our classroom by combining science with math.
It also gives students the chance to connect to something hands-on and out in their natural environment. Students will be able to carry this over into real-life situations as they grow into young adults. They will learn the importance of watching weather patterns and how they affect our daily lives!
