My classroom’s need is best expressed in the words of a very insightful student: “Mrs. H, I think you might need to buy us some carpet.” After almost a year of fighting over spots on the floor, getting bare legs stuck to the linoleum and an all around uncomfortable experience, its time for my students to have a rug!! I teach in a Title I school where classroom resources are in high demand and very appreciated. It is my first year teaching, so I am steadily building up my supply of resources and supplies. I’ve been able to use Title I funds to purchase a variety of instructional resources, but the funds were depleted when the time came to add some finishing touches to the classroom. I have found that my students learn best when they are given the opportunity to be in close proximity to me and the whiteboard. Most of all, they enjoy being able to move away from their desks and have a change of scenery. The only problem is that the linoleum floor can be pretty uncomfortable, especially when it’s very cold (frozen legs) or very hot (sweaty legs) outside. On top of that, my students are very adamant about their spots on the floor and it can be pretty tricky to find that exact spot every time. My students have become pretty creative with being able to find particular spots and dust particles on the floor to mark their location! I have plenty of educational materials, but now it's time to find a comfortable spot for the students to enjoy those materials. I want to be able to read books, teach lessons and conduct class meetings in a spot where students feel comfortable. A classroom rug is exactly what we need! I have found a rug with bright, bold colors that will enliven the classroom and best of all it has 20 blocks…one block for each student. No more arguing over who had the spot next to the small black scuff mark on the floor! I have rearranged the classroom so that there is an ideal spot, right in front of the whiteboard where I can place the rug. This rug will satisfy two needs…..it will allow students to have their own special spot on the floor and allow them to concentrate on learning and not the hard floor. My second graders rarely ask for much, but after they expressed the need for a rug, I knew it was a big deal. I want to give them every educational opportunity available, but I also want to make sure they feel safe, comfortable and appreciated in the process. Please help me show my students how much I appreciate their eagerness and motivation by allowing them to have something they can enjoy on a daily basis. Thank you for your interest and support!
