One of the things I love about working with my students is witnessing their desires to be in charge of projects, to create, to make discoveries, and to make a difference. They want to do their part to make the world a better place.
My school represents a diverse population with many languages spoken by our families.
It's an exciting place to be. We are a Title 1 School, so there is always a need to bring in resources and provide our students with a variety of experiences. My students are always excited to learn, especially when we are doing hands-on activities that allow them the freedom to create and problem solve and experiment.
My Project
I plan on taking my students to different areas of the school on a regular basis to do bird counts for the Celebrate Urban Birds citizen science project. My school is surrounded by desert lots, and in the back we have a riparian-like environment. There are many shrubs and trees where birds like to hang out. Students will be able to cover larger areas without leaving campus if they have binoculars and will also be able to get a better look at birds that are in nearby trees. Working in birding groups, students will tally how many birds they see and will hopefully be able to identify them as well. The information will be recorded on an official form and sent to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
In the near future, I hope my students will be able to create a bird habitat next to our portable classroom and take classmates on birding adventures around the school. As data is collected, my students will be able to observe trends and create informational projects about the birds at school.
Providing my students with binoculars means they will have the necessary tools to better participate in the Celebrate Urban Birds citizen science project, which is part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Binoculars will enhance their ability to spot birds and accurately identify them. Also, learning how to use binoculars is a great life skill to learn. I can't wait to see my students exploring their neighborhood environment and learning to appreciate the wildlife all around us.
