Exposure to Differences for Preschoolers

My project needs 6 sets of dolls with special abilities.

We have to base our future on our children, and it is sad to think that our children continue to have stereotypes of others with special needs and differences. I teach special education preschool in a rural county in North Carolina. Our county has 14 other classrooms with preschools in Headstart and more at four. In those classrooms there are some children with mild special needs. Generally the children with more severe needs go into a self contained room.

It is sad to see 3 and 4 year olds staring and laughing at others because they are different. We have to teach our young children to accept differences and not be scared of others who may act or look different. It is also sad to see teachers who are not accepting of children with special needs, most likely because they have never been educated themselves.

To help educate the children and teachers of these "typical" classrooms I want to expose the children to special needs. I want to provide the other classrooms with dolls that have special needs for them to play with in their housekeeping centers. This is only one step to exposure and acceptance. These dolls have walkers, wheelchairs, and leg braces. I want for each of the 6 sites to share a set of 4 dolls between the 2 or 3 classrooms.

This project is going to begin to help these young children have exposure and learn about others differences and abilities. I hope that it will help new friendships to occur and less children being left out.
