Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kindergarten students are naturally curious about the world around them. On a daily basis, I find myself peppered with questions. Rather than simply supplying the answers, the children need a place to investigate and explore on their own. We need a makerspace!
Our class is located in a small neighborhood school in California.
We are a public, high poverty school, with the majority of the students receiving free or reduced price meals at school. The families I serve are hard-working folks who want the best for their children. While we speak only English in our classroom, many of the children speak Spanish or Punjabi at home. The children have living situations as diverse as they are. Some students live in nuclear families, others with single parents, a few with foster parents, and still others in multifamily homes. While we are considered a general classroom, we have students with challenges like Autism, ADHD, and speech/language delays who call our room home. While we come from varied backgrounds, abilities, and cultures, we stand united in our desire to learn and work together!
My Project
A makerspace is an area where children can take hold of their own learning. They can paint, build, deconstruct, and explore a myriad of self-selected topics using real world tools and supplies. The carpet will help delineate the space, while the easel will be used by students to record their findings. In addition, the children need a drying rack to safely store their art work as it dries. Using actual tools such as screwdrivers, the children can develop fine motor and reasoning skills as they deconstruct small appliances or build their own creations. Construction helmets and lab coats will be worn by the students as they work.
Having a makerspace in our classroom will provide the children an opportunity for authentic learning.
I envision the children collaborating on projects, creating beautiful artwork, and exploring scientific principles in this creative area. With your help, we will soon have these amazing resources in our kindergarten classroom. I can't wait to see what the children will make first!
