My Students
My favorite quote is, "The end of all education should surely be service to others" by Cesar Chavez. My teaching philosophy revolves around that quote. I am a teacher who inspires and motivates students to be good and caring individuals. I also encourage students to attend higher education.
My advisory is full of diversity.
It is composed of Caucasians, Chicanos, African Americans, and students of mixed heritage. We also have members of the LGBTIQ community. I am proud to say that my students are open minded and engaged in social issues in our community.
Our school is a non traditional charter school where students pursue their passions and explore careers in the "real world" through internships.
One of the many things that I love about our school is that our students are required to attend eight cultural events a year, and to complete 40 hours of community service. These requirements teach our students to become culturally aware and to give back to their communities.
My Project
The class set of Elie Wiesel's "Night" will be used in our advisory's English class. Students at our school are expected to complete an autobiography by senior year (50-75 pages), and "Night" is a perfect example of what an autobiography should be.
Through this book, students will learn about World War II and the Holocaust and the journey of a Jewish boy and his family during this tumultuous time of survival. My students are 10th graders and are currently enrolled in world history. This book directly relates to what they are learning in that class.
I have a whole unit planned around this book that includes journal writing, reflective essays, book report, movie critique, interactive online resources and much more.
