This year, we set ambitious reading goals to help students grow at their individual levels. During our first reading session, only 9 out of 52 students met their goals. By the second session, all but one student reached their goal. The growth has been incredible.\r\n\r\nMany of my students come from low-income households where access to books is limited. It has taken dedication, structure, and constant encouragement to help them discover the joy of reading. I have watched students who once avoided books completely become fully immersed in stories. They eagerly take quizzes, track their progress, and set new goals for themselves. Some finish books in a single day because they simply cannot put them down.\r\n\r\nThe challenge we now face is access.\r\n\r\nOur classroom library is very small, and most books have already been read—some multiple times. Spanish books are significantly more expensive and harder to find, especially titles that align with students’ reading levels and include comprehension quizzes to support their goals. Although I purchase books myself and borrow from the public library, it is still not enough. Students visit the school library every two weeks, but many finish their books long before their next visit and are left waiting for something new to read.\r\n\r\nIt is heartbreaking to encourage a love of reading and not have enough books to place in their hands. My students deserve engaging, high-quality Spanish books that will help them continue growing as confident bilingual readers.\r\n\r\nWith your support, we can expand our classroom library and ensure that not only this year’s fifth graders—but all future students—have access to books that inspire them. Many of the books and materials I previously used are not developmentally appropriate or accessible for my current students’ needs.\r\n\r\nThis project will help build an inclusive classroom library filled with engaging picture books, adapted literacy materials, listening center resources, and hands-on supports that make reading accessible for all learners. These materials will support language development, communication, early literacy, social-emotional learning, and a love of reading from an early age.\r\n\r\nMany of my students rely heavily on repetition, visuals, and interactive learning opportunities to build understanding and confidence. Having access to high-interest books and literacy materials throughout the school day will allow students to participate more independently and meaningfully in classroom learning.\r\n\r\nMy goal is to create a classroom where every child sees themselves as a reader and feels excited, successful, and included during literacy activities.","hasReceivedDonations":true,"proposalURL":"project/literacy-for-every-learner/10303250/","hasBeenFunded":false,"matchMultiplier":"2X","location":"Rohnert Park, CA","id":10303250,"title":"Literacy for Every Learner"},{"profilePhotoURL":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9286637_orig.jpg?crop=1170,1170,x0,y456&width=136&height=136&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1779544709911","schoolName":"Fort Worthington Elementary Middle School 85","costToComplete":165.52,"teacherId":9286637,"hideDetails":false,"teacherName":"Ms. Smiling","numDonors":0,"numStudents":100,"fulfillmentTrailer":"Help me give my students a comfortable reading space and the tools to build strong reading habits, track their progress, and think critically about what they read","totalPrice":165.52,"povertyLevel":"Nearly all students from low‑income households","essay":"My 7th grade students are at a critical point in their academic journey where reading stamina, comprehension, and independence begin to shape their long-term success. In our ELA classroom, students are expected to read daily, engage with complex texts, and develop the skills needed to think critically and discuss their ideas with others.\r\n\r\nThis project will help create a structured and welcoming reading environment where students can comfortably read, reflect, and stay focused. The resources in this project will support independent reading time by giving students access to engaging books, a dedicated reading space, and tools to track and deepen their understanding of what they read. My goal is to build confidence, consistency, and a genuine love of reading in every student.","hasReceivedDonations":false,"proposalURL":"project/building-confident-independent-readers-i/10305327/","hasBeenFunded":false,"matchMultiplier":"2X","location":"Baltimore, MD","id":10305327,"title":"Building Confident Independent Readers in 7th Grade ELA"}]
