How We’re Supporting Teachers and Students

In this turbulent time, America’s teachers and students need support more than ever. Here’s how our community is helping.

What Teachers Need

When schools began closing in early March, we surveyed our teachers on how the shift to at-home learning would impact their students. Here’s what more than 4,000 teachers told us:

Distance Learning Projects

Reaching teachers and students, no matter where they are

As of late April, every U.S. public school teacher, preK-12, can create Distance Learning Projects on DonorsChoose. Teachers can shop for the school supplies, food, and hygiene essentials their students need. When the project is fully funded, teachers enter the shipping address that gets the items directly to the teacher or to a student’s home.

Ship to a student

Teachers can create an “education care package” for a single student and send it directly to their home.

Ship to home and distribute

Teachers can order items for multiple students, shipped to the teacher’s home. Teachers can distribute safely in the way that makes sense for their students.

Ship to home and teach

Teachers can request the items they need to teach, sent straight to their home.

Keep Kids Learning

A Pilot Program to Send Urgent Materials to Students at Home

To respond to the unprecedented needs teachers have for home learning support, we’ve launched Keep Kids Learning. For 20 years, we’ve shipped educational resources directly to schools. Now, we’re temporarily empowering teachers to get vital resources to students’ homes.

1 Donors give

100% of funds go directly to student materials. Whether you have $5 or $500, every dollar makes a difference. Anyone and everyone can give to Keep Kids Learning.

2 Teachers request exactly what their students need

Donations go to teachers at the highest economic-need schools in the country in the form of funding credits. Teachers shop from a catalog of materials to keep students healthy and learning.

3 Students get the supplies they need

Materials are shipped to teachers for distribution or directly to student homes. Right now, we're piloting this program with a small group of teachers. As we continue to raise funds, we hope to open this opportunity to additional public school teachers across the United States.

See our impact

My [students'] families are as hard-working as my students and having the power to support them when I can’t see them every day would mean everything to me.

Other Ways We’re Supporting Teachers

In addition to the Keep Kids Learning program, we’ve made updates to ensure the thousands of classroom projects teachers have posted on our site can continue to collect funding without concern for logistics.

Adjusting deliveries for closed schools

We’re delaying shipments, rescheduling field trips, and giving flexibility on thank-you packages while schools are closed.
