My students are bright and eager learners. Their parents know the importance of school and reading, but don't always know how to transition their fifth graders to the next stage in their reading journey. My district is focused on making our children better readers but underestimate the value of teaching intermediate elementary students through novels. They buy the most expensive reading programs that are great to supplement the curriculum, but lack the ability to motivate learners who are dreaming of their video games back at home. My students need exciting books with real characters and exciting plots to capture their attention. In my 17 years of experience, the only time I hear "Yes!" during reading lessons is when I say, "OK class, take out your novels."
