Hello! My name is Lindsey Wuest (pronounced like guest, but with a “w”). To most of my students I am known as “HEY, MISS!” I am a first year teacher on the Big Island at Pahoa High and Intermediate. I teach Special Education English and advise the vibrant and ridiculous Art Club. Every small success is a celebration in a vacation destination and every failure is just a pothole on the road to paradise. Pahoa High and Intermediate is situated in a low-income community in a not-so-typical rural setting. Tropical jungle surrounds the houses, coqui frogs call through the night and wild roosters awaken us. Mere miles from black sand beaches and a town called “Vacationland, “ my students are aware of the striking dichotomy of wealth and poverty on the Big Island. 87% of students receive free or reduced lunch, some do not have electricity in their homes, but ALL of my students are quirky, lovable characters.
