My students come from very low income backgrounds and a diverse array of living situations. Western Oaks Elementary is an urban school in Oklahoma. By fifth grade, many of my students have attended many different schools, and due to a lack of stability they often have many negative feelings about school. We have a lovely school environment to help all students to feel safe and welcome. The development of this same positive climate is an important part of every decision I make in my classroom and instruction. It is my greatest goal to foster a climate in which all learners feel free to learn and work in the ways they are most comfortable. Many of my students have grown up in apartments where there are always people around to work and play with. This creates many social learners in my classroom, and I try to use this to our advantage as much as possible.
