Our school is a small, urban public high school in New York. A large majority of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and many of them also work part-time jobs in addition to going to school. The 11th and 12th graders in my AP Calculus class are among the most successful students in our school; they have consistently demonstrated their commitment to their education and have chosen to take the most challenging program available in the school. Many of them will be first generation college students in the coming years, and hope that their success in AP courses will help them be better prepared for the challenges ahead. I've only had this particular group of students for a month, but they have already proven to me that they are committed to the work required in AP Calculus and are prepared to do the work necessary for success in this college-level course.
