A School Health & Wellness Program is an organized program that assists students & employees to voluntarily make choices that improve health and productivity. Workplace wellness programs focused on prevention and intervention benefit students, employees and employers by reducing the overall health risk factors to include: • Being overweight • Poor nutrition • Lack of exercise • Complications from health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. While unhealthy behavior can greatly affect an individual’s health, it can also be expensive for an employer. Indirect costs associated with employees’ unhealthy lifestyles include: • Decreased productivity • Training of new staff due to the disability of current staff to perform the job duties • Work related injuries • Excessive sick leave usage For students and educators, a healthier lifestyle would increase classroom attentiveness, attitude, and overall productivity. Other potential benefits to an School Health & Wellness Program include Reduced Stress, and improved morale. Goals: 1. Goal – Educate participants about the importance of maintaining a proper weight and maintaining a healthy diet through programs and initiatives. 2. Goal – Educate participants about the importance of exercise and proper eating; including the types and use of “at home” fitness equipment. Involving the implementation of workouts that incorporate “at home” equipment (i.e. jump ropes, yoga mats, kettle bells, etc.) Also, taking participants on a group grocery trip to encourage proper dietary methods. 3. Goal – Educate participants about the seriousness of chronic health conditions to include heart disease, diabetes. 4. Goal – Increase staff support towards overall, PTS membership, and bettering the mission of PTSA initiatives. 5. Goal – Increase employee competitiveness and overall morale.
