Cooking at school is an opportunity for students with special needs to put their academics to use in a functional way. Students will be learning cooking vocabulary, kitchen safety, using math for measuring, and following directions while using the requested Prep and Work Table, refrigerator, electric range, and espresso machine. Students will also improve their motor skills as they roll, mash, and knead food items. Cooking can also help students to learn to maintain focus and stay on task. Lifelong effects of cooking at school are that it promotes eating healthy foods, saving money from not eating out, and it increases their independence. Students will also achieve a sense of accomplishment/self-confidence because they are helping contribute to their family meals.
