Many of my students are English Language Learners, and therefore, regular novels can sometimes be a challenge for them. Additionally, because of their background, regular novels may not keep them engaged. However, "Persepolis" is a graphic novel, but still contains content that is both vital to learning about other cultures, and is still engaging and non-intimidating, regardless of the students' reading level. Students will complete discussion questions each week with each chapter, and will build their vocabulary skills through the novel in a way that is easy for them to understand. Graphic novels are the next generations' gateway into creating a new generation of readers.
