Have you ever sunk your teeth into a good book or book series? Literally felt joy, sadness, and excitement by the hands of an author? Literature is a way to escape the confines of reality and experience the world without boundaries. For my students, books they can read independently are often written for young children. High school students don't care about Spot and certainly don't want to be seen reading Junie B. Jones. That is where Saddleback's Paperback Collection comes in. The books in this collection touch on a number of age-appropriate topics written at a low reading level. These books are a crucial part of creating a classroom of "hungry readers." My students cannot just go to the library and take out a book to read for leisure that wouldn't feel "babyish", yet reading independently contributes to better literacy, communication, and overall comprehension. I currently have a limited number of books that I can offer to my students. My learners range from a first grade to sixth-grade reading level. Being able to establish a substantial high-low library will impact my students in a huge way. Students will no longer feel ashamed to walk the halls with a book. In addition, they will be motivated by the content to continue reading! I want to transform their idea of literature and help them have that "ok I'll stop reading, just one more page" moment. Please, help my students experience the world without boundaries.
