These books will enhance the way we approach American history and when coupled with effective reading strategies, they will improve reading skills. Students will have the opportunity to connect to history though group reading and questioning. Those who are currently reluctant readers will get much needed practice while learning to think like an historian. With these new books, students will have the chance to not only sharpen their reading skills but they will have the opportunity to examine our nations history through the lens of social change and resistance. This will inspire students to become more active members of their community and their democracy. This is not your grandfather’s textbook. It will engage and inspire students to question and more importantly, seek solutions to the challenges our country faces today. Over the last 18 months, my students have shown an impressive interest in US history and this project will give them the material they need to engage further and eventually grow into lifelong learners.
