Two Chicago Public School classrooms with differing socio-economic backgrounds will connect through rich literature (Freckle Juice and The Graves Family) with use of pen-pal activities to support their reading and writing abilities. Imagine the excitement of sending and receiving letters from another classroom as a motivation to support their learning within the classroom!
Discovery and acceptance of students' differences will empower their ability to recognize similarities among each other. The social-emotional learning associated into the themes of these novels, such as empathy and kindness, will be supported in this project. Topics such as respect, responsibility, self-acceptance, perseverance, and independence are some points of discussion as well.
The students will have a chance to Skype or FaceTime each other throughout our books study. They will write to each other at least two times per quarter. My colleague (from another Chicago school) has set up a similar project for two other books that will be used in a classroom shared reading experience between our classrooms. We will culminate in a meet & greet with a visit of one class to the other school as a field trip.
