The materials that I am requesting for my classroom, a 55-gallon tank along with new lamps, a heating pad, a cricket keeper, and cricket food, will be used to help upgrade our class pet’s home. We were blessed to receive a bearded dragon through a classroom pet grant. The students have fallen in love with our Stella. However, Stella is growing so quickly she will soon outgrow the 20-gallon enclosure she came with. Stella will require more room and additional materials to heat the new enclosure.
Having a class pet has been a huge incentive for many of my students to study a little harder in order to have extra time to interact with our bearded dragon. A prime example of this is a student who had not been especially successful in science this year. He loves the bearded dragon and interacts with Stella every opportunity he has. I suggested to him that he could hold her if he passed an upcoming science test. I was just hoping for a passing grade, but he was hoping for a little more. He scored a 90; this is just one example of many!
Many of my students are from low-income families, and many have never had the opportunity to have a pet, especially a reptile. We study animal kingdoms in 6th grade. It has been a wonderful hands on experience for my students to be able to hold and/or touch a reptile and see the special qualities that only reptiles possess. Stella has also helped my students to learn what it’s like to be reponsible for another living creature.
