Nothing can truly replace for an artist, the experience of looking back over years of sketchbooks/journals. An artists' sketchbook or journal is a tangible manifestation of the time spent practicing and experimenting to develop and grow. For student artists, a blank sheet or canvas can be hugely intimidating, especially if their inner critic is telling them, "I can't draw", or "I'm no good at art". A student artists' sketchbook or journal is even more crucial to their development and growth than established artists, as it gives them a safe space to experiment with new art media, practice a skill that they aren't strong in, flush out ideas for a final project, as well as keep a record of their early artistic development. My students struggle greatly in valuing the work and practice we do in my class. Often, their art and attitude towards it is a direct metaphor for their feelings about themselves. Art has an incredible ability to heal traumas and reach across socio-economic status. As a trauma-informed classroom, I believe the psychological effect of students having their own, tangible sketchbook/journal, will heighten both their engagement in classroom experimentation and exploration, as well as increase the value they place on their artwork, and, ultimately, themselves.
