The students attend a New York City Public School in East Harlem. My class in East Harlem is a designated 12:1:4 classroom setting (students with multiple disabilities, low-incidence disabilities, and "medically fragile" children). The students in my class are both non-ambulatory and non-verbal and their diagnoses include, but are not limited to: global developmental delay, spastic quadriplegia, cerebral palsy, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and seizure disorder. While the specific learning characteristics of each student varies, all students display deficits in cognitive functioning, adaptive skills, (fine and gross) motor skills, sensory functioning, and communication skills. While the students in my class have a wide range of disabilities and impairments, the students are successfully acquiring skills through intensive sensory input that is provided with attention to their interests and strengths.
