Those familiar with Breakfast Club will recognize my students. The jocks, the misunderstood rebels, the cheerleaders, the nerds, the bullied, and the artist. Every student archetype roams the halls, except maybe the scientist, because they've never been afforded the opportunity. We are the Crenshaw Cougars, of Los Angeles. Strangers living states away recognize our name. The environment surrounding us is tough, the poverty level high, but we are a beacon of hope within our community. We are improving ourselves to be the change we wish to see in our community and our world. Our attendance is increasing, our test scores are increasing, our after-school program enrollment is skyrocketing. We are are a positive, unifying force in an area that is often fragmented by gang activity. We are hopeful students who want nothing more than the equal opportunity to make it in our world.
