Five years ago on my first day teaching music at a new school, there was a fifth grade student who would not sing along with the class as we read the words on the screen. He was a distraction to everyone. I encouraged him to join us, but the student still would not sing. I assumed that he was just being rebellious. Later I learned this fifth grader read at a first grade level. He could not read the simple words on the screen. He is just one example of the large percentage of students at this school who, because of economic challenges are greatly disadvantaged in their education.
