I service students from grades 6 to 8 within my self-contained classroom daily. I teach 5 periods a day, where students rotate in and out of my room for their primary academic needs (i.e. Reading, Writing, Math, and additional reading intervention support). The students that make up my classroom range in disability areas and benefit from a classroom environment that meets their individual needs. This year we implemented some flexible seating with the use of "mushroom" chairs and pillows, but I would like to take it a step further. Many of my students are diagnosed with ADHD and having a place in the classroom where they can choose to either sit or stand would be incredibly beneficial to them and their peers. Being able to stand could help them focus more and accomplish their classwork in a quicker time period. Flexible seating has been something that I have wanted to try out in my classroom but never had the courage to do so due to the behavioral and academic needs in my room. After the success of our minor attempt this year, I feel that this is the best time to take it a step further. My students deserve an environment that is catered to their needs, both academically and emotionally. I hope to create an environment where they feel welcomed and safe. I do not want them to feel isolated from their peers in anyway and hope to create a space that they want to be in despite being away from the other students in their grade.
