Many of my students come to school without the basic necessities for learning. They live in tough neighborhoods where school may not be a priority because of the everyday obstacles at home, and often have worries, concerns and obstacles that other students would not face. The students I teach are in a transfer school because they needed more support, credits, and tools than a traditional secondary school could offer. Since most of the students I teach lack stability outside of the classroom, I want them to come to class and make them feel welcomed, appreciated, and well-planned for. When they come to school, and enter my classroom they should feel comfortable enough to let down any walls they have built. I want my class to be a safe haven. Once you get to know these children, and get them to open up you, it is clear they are bright individuals with talents and abilities that will help them learn and succeed.
