Reading is proven to help students succeed academically in every subject area. Like me, students in my classroom get much more interested and excited when they get to read in a cozy spot. The only options provided to them by the school are their uniform student chairs and desks. Often times they find a spot with one of my pillows, against the brick wall, or on the floor. However, the “go to” spot is my comfy teacher chair. I want these kids to have options that are for THEM where THEY feel comfortable enough to get cozy with a good book, without being interrupted. When students don’t have to think about their comfort as their reading, they get a lot more into it. I want to teach my students that reading can be fun and enjoyable in the classroom, which will hopefully transfer into their everyday life, building better readers in the process. Having a cozy spot for them to indulge in a good book is key, but having a uniform library is also important. My current bookshelves are falling apart, with several cracks and the backing not properly secured. This is causing several of my books to fall behind the bookshelf, ultimately getting damaged in the process. I want to give my students bookshelves with adequate space for all of my books. I would like to also add a few more bookshelves to my library, making enough space for all of the different sizes of books that I have, allowing room for my growing library. If I can keep my books safe, I will have a lot more options for these kiddos to grow their interest in reading.
