Creating a “Clarity Corner” is an important step in helping my students develop their ability to self-regulate. It will be established as a safe space where my students can go when they feel overwhelmed or anxious. As an inclusion educator, I advocate for all my students to handle different situations with varying degrees of success. Having a designated space to play and relax in-allows for my students to feel safe and comfortable. This area will feature a canopy and tent that lets them take a break in private. It also has a soft comfortable seating area that's big enough to accommodate a variety of sizes and shapes. Being an educator who has an inclusion class, the use of sensory objects can be a pivotal moment between minimal distractions or extreme behavioral incidents. Through the use of sensory toys, my students can relax and calm down at their pace. The puck lights give my students the ability to immediately notify the teacher(s) of any questions or concerns they may have. For instance, if a student has an urgent need, he or she can press his/her light to notify my co-teacher or me of their needs in a rather more discrete manner (so that they don’t have to raise their hands). The teacher will acknowledge the student and use the remote control to reset his/her light while I (or co-teacher) go to the aid of the student(s). The use of the lights will be a visual stimulus acknowledging that there is a need or concern for both the teachers and students.
