This project is titled using a play on words based on my first graders' favorite book year after year (Do Not Open This Book!). It gets them hooked every time as soon as they first read the title. I'm hoping this collection of books will offer future classes of mine many more favorites to choose from. This collection will offer my scholars the exposure they need to a variety of books. This is necessary to learn how to read during these critical academic years. I once read that in order to be effective, teachers need 100 books in their classroom library...per child! This is primarily because their reading level will change throughout the school year and it's important that they have books to reflect that so they can continue to practice and grow (instead of plateau). I find that my students LOVE to read and are extremely proud of themselves as they grow as readers. The only thing holding them back is having appropriate and necessary resources to do this (for every child and not just the few students on grade level). Reading offers my students the happy escape they need during their day and the confidence they need to do well in all other areas of school. This project can offer them that!
