Studies have shown that children who learn to read by 3rd grade go on to become astute readers, whereas students who fail to learn to read fluently by 3rd grade find it nearly impossible to to close the gap. In middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. (Neuman, Susan B. and David K. Dickinson, ed. Handbook of Early Literacy Research, Volume 2. New York, NY: 2006, p. 31) Providing books for these students to have access at home can massively improve these students level of literacy. I hope to send off each second grader participating in Literature Club home with a basket of books so they can continue to read when they are away from school. Children growing up in homes with at least twenty books get three years more schooling than children from bookless homes, independent of their parents’ education, occupation, and class. (Evans, M. D., Kelley, J., Sikora, J., & Treiman, D. J. (2010). Family scholarly culture and educational success: Books and schooling in 27 nations. Research in Social Stratification and Mobility, 28(2), 171-197.) Imagine what the equivalent of three additional years of instruction can do to improve the literacy of these students. The books that I wish to provide are high-interest, high-quality text. Each child will receive 16 soft cover books that they haven't yet explored and two hard cover books that they have experienced in our Lit. Club meetings. To encourage the reading of the books while away from school, a reading log will be incorporated that will give them an opportunity to receive a reward when completed and returned.
